Learn to Snowboard

Build Your Skills – Step by Step

Where Are You in Your Snowboarding Progression?

You don’t need to learn everything at once. Start with where your riding is now and focus on the skills that will help you take the next step.

New to Snowboarding? Start Here

Your first few days of snowboarding can be hard work. You’ll probably fall, your legs might ache and there may be moments when you wonder why everyone else makes turning look so easy.

Stick with it.

The goal at this stage isn’t speed or tackling harder runs. It’s getting comfortable on your snowboard, learning how your edges work and gradually building enough control to start linking turns.

Learn to Control Your Snowboard

Before worrying about riding faster or tackling harder terrain, concentrate on control.

Being able to slow down, stop and put your snowboard where you want it gives you the confidence to relax. And once you’re relaxed, learning everything else becomes a whole lot easier.

Progress From Beginner to Intermediate

The jump from beginner to intermediate isn’t about finally making it down a particular colour of run.

It’s about becoming more consistent.

Your turns require less thought, your speed is under control and you’re able to adapt when the slope, snow or terrain changes.

If that sounds like where you’re heading, this is the stage where you can start refining your technique rather than simply trying to stay upright.

Take Your Snowboarding Further

Once turning and speed control start becoming automatic, the mountain gets a lot bigger.

You can start exploring different terrain, experimenting with new techniques and figuring out what sort of snowboarding you actually enjoy.

There’s no single direction you need to follow. Pick the skills and terrain that make you want to keep riding.

Ready to Find the Right Snowboard?

As your riding progresses, you’ll start developing a much better idea of what you actually want from a snowboard.

That’s when things like flex, profile and shape start making more sense.

Our Choosing a Snowboard guides break those decisions down into straightforward steps, so you can match your snowboard to your ability, riding style and where you want to go next.

Keep Progressing

Snowboarding progression isn’t always a straight line.

Some days everything clicks. Other days you’ll struggle with something you thought you’d already figured out. That’s part of learning. Don’t worry too much about whether you’re progressing faster or slower than somebody else. Work out where your riding is now.

Pick one thing to improve. Spend some time actually riding. Then find the next thing.

But most importantly, have fun!
